Late-time behavior of stellar collapse and explosions. II. Nonlinear evolution.

چکیده
We compare the predictions of linearized theory for the radiation produced in the collapse of a spherically symmetric scalar field with a full numerical integration of the Einstein equations. We find power-law tails and quasinormal ringing remarkably similar to predictions of linearized theory even in cases where nonlinearities are crucial. We also show that power-law tails develop even when the collapsing scalar field fails to produce a black hole. Typeset using REVTEX

Late-time behavior of stellar collapse and explosions. I. Linearized perturbations.
We study the power-law tails in the evolution of massless fields around a fixed background geometry corresponding to a black hole. We give analytical arguments for their existence at scri+, at the future horizon and at future timelike infinity. We confirm their existence with numerical integrations of the curved spacetime wave equation on the background of a Schwarzschild and a Reissner-Nordstr...
متن کاملProgenitors of core-collapse supernovae
Knowledge of the progenitors of core-collapse supernovae is a fundamental component in understanding the explosions. The recent progress in finding such stars is reviewed. The minimum initial mass that can produce a supernova has converged to 8± 1M⊙, from direct detections of red supergiant progenitors of II-P SNe and the most massive white dwarf progenitors, although this value is model depend...
متن کاملStellar Explosions: from Supernovae to Gamma-ray Bursts
Current understanding of core collapse and thermonuclear supernovae is reviewed. Recent progress in unveiling the nature of cosmic gamma-ray bursts (GRB) is discussed, with the focus on the apparent link of several GRBs with an energetic subclass of stellar explosions, type Ib/c core-collapse supernovae. This relation provides the strong case that the GRB phenomenon is connected with the final ...
متن کاملExplosions of O - Ne - Mg cores , the Crab supernova , and subluminous Type II - P supernovae
We present results of simulations of stellar collapse and explosions in spherical symmetry for progenitor stars in the 8–10 M⊙ range with an O-Ne-Mg core. The simulations were continued until nearly one second after core bounce and were performed with the P/V code with a variable Eddington factor solver for the neutrino transport, including a state-of-the-art treatment of neutrino...
متن کاملThe Properties of Hypernovae : SNe Ic 1998 bw , 1997 ef
We discuss the properties of the hyper-energetic Type Ic supernovae (SNe Ic) 1998bw and 1997ef and Type IIn supernova (SN IIn) 1997cy. SNe Ic 1998bw and 1997ef are characterized by their large luminosity and the very broad spectral features. Their observed properties can be explained if they are very energetic SN explosions with the kinetic energy of EK ∼ > 1 × 10 52 erg, originating probably f...
